I am not a guru, but I've been following the discussion about file copying between afs
servers and minimizing the overhead of the client initiated copy operation (bypassing
cache manager of the client). I haven't looked at the code very closely, but there is
an open protocol for network based backups (www.ndmp.org). They are addressing the
same kind of problem (network based storage devices directly contacting the output
device for high performance backups). Someone further interested in the topic might
want to take a look at their efforts.
