I'm just wondering if it would make sense to get rid of all the references
to it, and the fluff in the Makefiles for dealing with it. Seems like that
could simplify most of the Makefiles significantly.
Anything that helps get rid of some of the cruft should make the eventual
autoconf switch easier.
