Yes, and the results were enormous amounts of corruption to /vice
partitions.  The direct UFS manipulation that the fileserver does is not
compatible with UFS logging.

However, using the NAMEI interface, which uses standard file and directory
access, you should be able to use any filesystem of your choosing.
