When I worked on kerberos at Cygnus, I recall concluding that VPATH
was portably usable, because the only make that couldn't be trusted
with VPATH was the SunOS *4* make -- and even that worked with
explicit dependencies (it just failed to track implicit ones.)  That
was back in the Solaris 2.3 era; presumably any SunOS 4 users today
are (1) retro (2) can suck it up and use gmake (3) *maybe* this got
fixed in 4.1.x (excuse me, solaris 1.1 :-)
