I've manually created an "/etc/fstab" file (Apple, in their infinite wisdom does not use it, despite the fact that OS X is supposed to be BSD). But that didn't help. I've even tried to manually create an "/etc/mtab" (something else they've decided to eliminate).
See 'man lookupd'. Since you (presumably) have lookupd configured to use NetInfo, fstab will not get used. You can configure lookupd or add the fstab entry to NetInfo.
