So my question: Where in the client is ViceId really used?

Nowhere. Well, "tokens" displays it. Set it to whatever you want.

Real IBM AFS/OpenAFS clients set it to the corresponding PTS ID, which is obtained by querying the ptserver. This was originally useful because certain application software (particularly, AMS) used it to find out what your PTS ID was instead of doing the lookup directly.

Other clients set it to your current UID, or even to 0.
