For the record, this diagnosis is correct. I had the same problem. This issue is ticket #15338 in the openafs-bugs RT queue and will be fixed in 1.3.72 openafs 1.3.71 on linux 2.6.8-1.541 has two other issues (#15339 and #15340) that people should be aware of if they plan on using this combination.
