I don't think there is any problem with the OpenLDAP codebase. As for code to reconnect, take a look at http://www.newwave.net/~masneyb/dhcp-3.0.2-ldap-patch It appears to be under a BSD-style license. Brett, maybe it would be most convenient to stick this on your iastate public web space?
