In late 2003, the csail.mit.edu cell was started on a desktop machine
in my office, running FreeBSD 5.2.

Arla works reasonably well; although there is still porting required
to make it work on 6.0/7-CURRENT, nnpfs is orders of magnitude easier
to port than the OpenAFS client (speaking as someone who has done
both).
