You should be using the latest 1.5.X release on Windows. And I'm pretty
sure it has largefile support (although I haven't tested it recently
myself.)

I believe the maximum number of files in a directory depends upon the
length of the filename, as there are ~64K "slots" and different file
lengths use different numbers of "slots."
