Interesting.  My impression was that non-PIC code in shared libraries had
been broken on every platform other than i386 for quite a while.  It may
be that PPC still allows it in some circumstances.

Derrick's, mostly, plus no one has really had time to work on the build
infrastructure.

The obvious long-term goal is to standardize the shared library API and
then create real shared libraries, but there's a lot of code cleanup
hidden behind that.
