I've been spending time profiling the Windows cache manager and have obtained significant performance improvements with the crude tools at my disposal. I went looking for better tools and came across the Intel VTune Performance Analysis Suite and their Thread Analysis tool (deadlock and contention avoidance).

I inquired about use of these tools by open source projects. The Windows and MacOS X versions are not available for non-commercial use. The Linux versions are:

The definition of non-commercial use excludes Derrick or myself from using them as we do get paid to work on OpenAFS. However, I am sure that there are members of the community that could make use of these tools to help determine where performance improvements can be found.
