I just tried your Gentoo ebuild (on 2.6.25_rc8) and got the following:

rc-scripts: Failed loading the afs kernel module

You need CONFIG_UNUSED_SYMBOLS=y in your kernel .config
Hopefully this will be adressed somehow for 1.4.7; distribution kernels for 2.6.25 are not likely to define
this option.
