(the relevant delta is add-volupdate-counter-20051015 ). That delta
was committed on HEAD for discussion, prior to the 1.5 branch being
made. From the comments on the bug report, there seem to be a number
of unresolved issues with this change, not least of which is the fact
that it makes a non-backwards compatible volume format change.
