Quoting "Jeffrey Hutzelman" <[email protected]>:

You must think that people who run production services have nothing to do all day but buy new hardware and put new operating systems on it and migrate their services.

Oh I =know= this isn't the case. I get those headaches all the time.

Also, please bear in mind that "Solaris 8/9" is not one version, and support timelines for 8 and 9 are not the same.

from http://www.sun.com/service/eosl/eosl_solaris.html

Last ship Phase 1 End Date Phase 2 End Date
Solaris 9 10/30/09 10/30/11 10/30/14
Trusted Solaris8 10/3/08 10/23/10 10/23/13
Solaris 8 02/16/07 3/31/09 03/31/12

I figure it will take at least year to get 1.6 out the door especially if the major feature is DAFS support. By that time Solaris 9 will have one foot in the grave when it ships.

However, it might be trivial to keep support for Solaris 9 since that is when the threading model changed which I think was the original persons point.
