If I remember correctly, Ron also has some Novell client software installed on his machine. I think there might be some interaction between the Novell client software and AFS but I am not sure.

I use the Novell client with AFS and don't have any trouble. The Novell client replaces MSGINA, but at our site, after the install, I put it back. The Novell client also adds a network provider. At our site I edit the registry to place the Novell client provider to be last in the provider order list. I also tweak the Novell client config so that the authenticator is disabled. The reason I do these things is because the Novell client at our site is configured to be very intrusive by our central IT services group, the ones who manage Novell. The default config of the Novell client is to clobber any drive mappings that already exist when you logon to Novell. Unfortunately, historically, UNCCharlotte's Novell system and Mosaic's AFS Cell use the same drives which leads to name collision. Based on your reply it wouldn't surprise me if that is the case at Ron's campus.
