Just for information: Debian Sarge Kernel 2.6.8 OpenAFS 1.3.76 on AFS Fileserver (with XFS for /vicepa) and Debian Sarge Kernel 2.4.27 OpenAFS 1.3.76 as client seems not to have any problems with large files. Createt on the client a laaarge 8GB .tar file stored on the server and copied back, no problem. Handle some more big files (dvd-images), no problems til yet. And yes, diskcache, not memcache.
