the network name "AFS" is not known to your computer.

Number one possible reason is that you have "File and Print Services" bound to the Microsoft Loopback Adapter. Only one SMB service can be
bound to an adapter. You want "Client for Microsoft Networks" turned
on and "File and Print Services" turned off.

Jeffrey, you're a genius. Thank you for taking the time to help out a noob. For the record, apparently "Novell Client for Windows" doesn't count as an SMB service; AFS doesn't care if it's bound to the loopback or not.
