We did get one Mac to work, the speacil Mac kinit can auto detect
if the tgt is a k4-afs key/salt, we will compare the config
with the non working macs

The more I researched  it there is no way to tell the standard
mit "kinit -4", (krb 4 compat mode), to expect afs key/salted tickets.

Thanks for reading this junk, I know I need to move to k5 etc.

Could very well be, but only if you changed software versions between the sun and the linux box, and I don't remember if you told us that.
