Hi All,
So, by the advice of others, I gave the included RPM a try, and it turns out
that after a few file moves/creations/edits, the afs client works perfectly,
so for convenience's sake, I'm going to accept that. However, I'm going to
try and find out what the RPM install is doing differently from my compile
from source out of my own curiosity. If I can get it running, I'll post my
results. Thanks for all the help!

I have had a similar problem some time ago. You should do the following:
1. Wait. You don't say whether you log on from within the local network
or over the Internet. Wait maybe five to ten minutes and have ethereal
or tcpdump report what is happening.
2. Try a different cell, e.g. stacken.kth.se and look whether the same
problem occurs.
I'm unable to kill any afs related processes (kill -9 pid) and have to
restart the machine to fix it.
This is because the afsd interacts directly with a kernel module and
that cannot be removed at that point without taking down the whole
kernel. (I think someone once told me the story like that.)
Bye
Tobias
