Why not put asetkey and aklog in a "compatibility kit" to be compiled
separately?

Its what SuSE did. There's trouble with the vendor's versions in two
directories and the openafs version in another.

I don't know when 1.3.84 dates from, but what we were talking about was the
CVS HEAD.  Unless 1.3.84 was released within the last few days, it won't
have any of the necessary stuff in it.
