I recommend using the instructions that come with the Debian package
instead (/usr/share/doc/openafs-modules-source/README.modules.gz), but I
think it largely amounts to the same thing in this case.

I have built and run the sarge version of OpenAFS on a 2.4.27 kernel, so I
know it works correctly.

Hm, are you sure you need this? I've never had to use -append_to_version
to get the versions to match when using make-kpkg with the defaults.

Are you also adding -append_to_version to your make-kpkg kernel_image
invocation?
