I think enough people have weighed in on how easy it is to go from Transarc AFS to OpenAFS. Generally, you just swap binaries. I suspect your technical types are underestimating how much your cell name gets embedded into the infrastructure of your site. I am not aware of anyone who's actually attempted such a thing (and lived to tell about it).
