Sorry, you are correct, you need --rebuild, not -bb.  I'm sorry.

   openafs-kernel-source-1.4.0-1.1.i386.rpm

Umm...  Did you supply the --target=i686 argument to rpmbuild?
If so, it should have created an RPM for the kernel module!  You
could still use the openafs-kernel-source if you wish, but there's
no requirement to do that.  It sounds like you did not supply it,
which would explain why it didn't build the kernel module (it
doesn't build a kernel module for target=i386).

I'll also note that for 1.4.1 I've fixed the issue that requires --nodeps.
