I began this journey... to limit the noise from filemon I close EVERYTHING (outlook, ie, etc) and ran just the quickfinder indexing engine and filemon. The whole process completed successfully. I really hate it when things don't brake when they should. So, I'm wondering if there is some other 'interaction' between quickfinder and some other friendly microsoft product. Anyway, qfinder indexes and qfinder searchs in afs space now seem to work.. if they crash again, and I have time, I'll leave outlook and nai running to see what they do.
