As you know, the reason that the name needed to be short was because of the need to append -AFS to the end of it when creating the NETBIOS name associated with the SMB service. With the loopback in place this should no longer be necessary.
In any case, if an exception is taking place, there is a bug and it must be fixed. Failing to file a report prevents it from being fixed. Please file the report.
