It is certainly the case that there remain issues with the Windows client.

  * No support for UNICODE file names

  * No support for NT Streams or Extended Attributes

  * The CIFS to AFS gateway model has a major problem in that
    it is not possible to control the CIFS client timeout.
    The CIFS protocol does not provide a mechanism for the server
    to inform the client that the operation is still in progress.
    So if the operation takes longer than the CIFS client expects
    it should take, the CIFS client tears down the virtual circuit
    breaking all file handles and locks, waits a period of time and
    then reconnects.

Fixing these problems will require a serious investment of resources.
