Being able to have snapshots of a volume or multiple backups of a

I think the simplest approach would be to clone a volume and give a
new but predictable name like vol.backup1 or vol.b20061207

Can't this be done right now with vos copy to the vol.b20061207 name?

Or am I missing something obvious?

'vos copy' does not produce a copy-on-write clone

Oh, right. Very true. However, a vos copy can exist on a seperate file server from the original cloned volume, which may or may not be more useful than saving the diskspace.
