Hi Jeff,
Does -showsuid also imply -nowrite, or can it be used with -nowrite
to avoid taking the server out?
Yes, -showsuid also implies -nowrite.
In general, you can always use -nowrite to run the salvager in a
read-only mode where it will only tell you what it would do, rather
than actually doing anything. This eliminates any need to shut down
the fileserver; however, you only get that benefit if you run the
salvager by hand - the 'bos salvage' command only knows how to
handle a limited number of salvager arguments.
Remember that if you run the salvager by hand and do not use one of
-nowrite, -showmounts, or -showsuid, you must shut down the
fileserver first. Otherwise you risk damaging volumes.
Isn't this true iff salvaging one or more partitions? Salvaging a
single volume doesn't cause 'bos salvage' to shut down the file
server ...
Correct.
Oh good. That's what I taught in the Transarc/IBM AFS Admin class.
Every once in a while I discover that I've misinformed a small herd of
admins. Usually not too egregiously.
I remember asking one of the Transarc developers what would happen if I
salvaged a partition without shutting down the fileserver process. As I
recall the consensus was that the file server and or the volserver might
try to modify the volume concurrent with the salvage, and that the
results were 'undefined.'
