callbacks are registered by the client's cache manager with the file server for a finite period of time not to exceed two hours. the actual time is dependent upon load. if the server cannot contact the cache manager when a callback must be issued to invalidate the contents of the cache, the file server will mark the client as out of date and communicate the state change the next time the client contacts the file server. in the meantime, the client will think the data in the cache is valid until the callback expires.
