Three is a good number for database servers. It is much easier to add than to remove or change a db server. So choose the IP numbers for your db-servers in a way that you won't need to change them often. If you choose to run your db-servers seperate from your file servers which have actual file data (/vicep*) on them, you can take you oldest most stable machines for that purpose. There is really not much HW needed to run the db-servers.
