One more thing. If your user is installing OpenAFS for Windows using the defaults and your cell is listed in the CellServDB file or has AFSDB records, there is nothing else that your user needs to do to OpenAFS. The workstation cell can be set during the installation but even that is not required. The default is to use Freelance mode.
All the user has to do is configure NIM's AFS panel to list your cell the very first time s/he obtains Kerberos v5 credentials. That is all. It sounds like your student was burned by attempts to configure OpenAFS without the appropriate credentials when configuration wasn't necessary. Note that Vista UAC mode is going to cause many headaches for Help Desks everywhere. The I am a member of the "Administrators" group but I don't have Administrator rights is going to confuse lots of people. For OpenAFS, it means you must explicitly run the afs control panel with Administrator's privileges. At least until there is funding to develop the new Vista UAC compatible version as described at http://www.secure-endpoints.com/openafs-windows-roadmap.html Jeffrey Altman Secure Endpoints Inc.
