DAS is our approach as well. We are using "white boxes" built from
a hot-swapable Chenbro case with 3ware's 12 port SATA card in a
raid-10 config.
We're getting down pretty close to about $1K/TB.
I imagine your Apple edu discount is similar to ours. We get the
Xserve RAIDs for the same cost/space ratio. And those can be DAS or
SAN'd.
