Completely true. However, if you're after raw speed, that's an option. If you manage your AFS infrastructure with something like Russ's volume database, you can bypass the vlserver and query that database. Alternatively, after doing the diff, you can then query the vldb for the volumes you have offline. There are definitely trade-offs involved. Thanks for making sure people are aware of that one.
