This year OpenAFS was accepted into Google's Summer of Code. We received applications from 29 students seeking to work on a wide variety of projects. Unfortunately not all of the projects that we believe should be funded can be funded by Google. Google has provided funding for 1000 students across 180 organizations. At the present time OpenAFS can only expect to receive at most six student slots. This is a fantastic allocation for OpenAFS as a first time GSoC organization. However, it will not be so fantastic for the students that will not have the opportunity to be funded this Summer.

How can you help? A GSoC stipend is US$5000. US$4500 for the student and US$500 for the organization. We would like you to ask your organizations if they would be willing to fund a student for the Summer under the GSoC terms. http://code.google.com/soc/2008/

The projects that have been proposed are listed on the OpenAFS GSoC page, http://www.openafs.org/gsoc.html. They range from designing a new web site for the OpenAFS community, to adding read/write replication, to per-file ACL support, to getting the AFS Servers stable on Microsoft Windows, to ports to FreeBSD and Minix3, to Windows Explorer Shell Extensions, and several other worthy ideas.

The OpenAFS Gatekeepers are in the process of determining which students will be funded through GSoC. Our decision needs to be made by this Friday. Google will announce the accepted students on Monday April 21st.

If your organization is willing to sponsor a student, please let us know as soon as possible. We would like to be able to notify students as they are rejected by Google that we have an alternative option for them.

Thank you.
