The OpenAFS website is designed around the experience of developers. End
users and administrators may find the web site to be difficult or
frustrating to use.

The web site redesign was offered as one of the projects for Google
Summer of Code 2008 but was not worked on because the candidates that
submitted the strongest applications also submitted applications for
more substantial programming projects. One of the GSoC students that
submitted a web design proposal, Jake Thebault-Spieker, has continued to
participate actively in the community and has remained interested in
working on the site. The OpenAFS Elders at the recommendation of the
Gatekeepers have agreed to hire Jake to complete the project as it was
outlined for GSoC 2008.

The goal of this project is to provide a web site which offers an
experience to users tailored to their needs, or, for administrators who
wish to or have deployed OpenAFS, provides ready access to the
information required. At the same time, the web site should be
sustainable given the skill set of people maintaining the site and the
data therein.

Any technology which can be adapted to handle the content of the web
site and the needs of the project is acceptable.

The student will be responsible for determining the needs of the Openafs
community that the web site will satisfy. This will be done by working
with the OpenAFS gatekeepers and surveying the community participants.

Over the next couple of weeks Jake will be putting together a needs
survey that members of the community and visitors to the openafs.org
site will be asked to complete. The data collected from this survey
will be used as input to a site map design and a subsequent implementation.

The gatekeepers and Jake will be meeting on Monday November 10th at 8am
EST (-500) in the [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jabber room to discuss
the survey requirements. All who are interested are invited to attend
and participate. Logs of the conference room are available at
http://jabber.openafs.org/
