Hi,

Hmmm, I just looked back at the log and noticed something I should have seen the first time.

Jan 27 17:09:01 macf loginwindow[27]: ERROR | -[ApplicationManager quitPrivateProcesses] | Application "Logitech Control Center Daemon" did not quit

Now, I am using a bluetooth mouse, which this message is probably referring to. I hadn't thought about it until now, but I do now and then have minor glitches with this. Could this be the problem and afs be not to blame ? I guess the question is would I normally expect to see more messages after

Jan 27 17:09:02 macf com.apple.SystemStarter[20]: Unloading AFS kernel extensions

which is the last one before the hangup ? I just did a test (successfully) reboot to see what messages are there in this case. Here, I do see more after the message above

Jan 27 17:51:25 localhost com.apple.SystemStarter[21]: Stopping AFS
Jan 27 17:51:25 localhost com.apple.SystemStarter[21]: Unmounting /afs
Jan 27 17:51:25 localhost com.apple.KernelEventAgent[29]: KernelEventAgent: sysctl_queryfs: Operation not supported on socket Jan 27 17:51:27 localhost com.apple.SystemStarter[21]: Shutting down afsd processes Jan 27 17:51:27 localhost com.apple.SystemStarter[21]: Unloading AFS kernel extensions Jan 27 17:51:27 localhost kernel[0]: WARM shutting down of: CB... afs... BkG... CTrunc... AFSDB... RxEvent... UnmaskRxkSignals... RxListener... Sleep... Unknown socket family 159 in NetReceive Jan 27 17:51:27 localhost kernel[0]: WARNING: not all blocks freed: large 0 small 4
Jan 27 17:51:27 localhost kernel[0]: ALL allocated tables
Jan 27 17:51:27 localhost kernel[0]: AFS not initialized - not shutting down
Jan 27 17:51:57 localhost kernel[0]: npvhash=4095
Jan 27 17:51:56 localhost com.apple.launchctl.System[2]: launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/chum.plist

So it seems on the shutdown that hung, it occurred between

Jan 27 17:51:27 localhost com.apple.SystemStarter[21]: Unloading AFS kernel extensions

and

Jan 27 17:51:27 localhost kernel[0]: WARM shutting down of: CB... afs... BkG... CTrunc... AFSDB... RxEvent... UnmaskRxkSignals... RxListener... Sleep... Unknown socket family 159 in NetReceive

??

cheers Chris

HI,

If AFS sticks shutting down and the network is still up, that's
definitely something new. And sadly the best way to track it is
something which isn't simple for me to explain to you.

Fate has thrown its fickle dice and I have just suffered another hang. I really hate having to hard reset this machine and thus need to get to the bottom of this. AFS is useful to me but I'm just not prepared to do this long term... I would rather live without AFS

Anyway, I need to get more info on what is causing this... I've had a look at /var/log/system.log - The last message before the reset (at 17.09 - I rebooted at 17.43) is from afs ... See below.

So, if you have *any* suggestions for how to dig deeper I'll love to hear. Coming from linux I'm not at all adverse to a bit of hacking, so perhaps building a debug version with more verbose messages ??

I'm using the 1.4.8 release - Would trying the 1.5.X release be an idea ?

cheers Chris
