turns out the culprit is the Open SuSE 11.1 YaST network configurator. the
127.0.0.2 is added to /etc/hosts automagically.

/etc/hosts:

10.1.1.186      ookpik.creedon.biz ookpik
127.0.0.2       ookpik.creedon.biz ookpik
