I think the sneaky thing was that
  a) UFS with logging may rot your files
  b) Some update made logging the default mount option
I don't think ZFS is safe either.

Correct. We use the namei and our vice partitions are now in ZFS.
Note the OpenAFS distributions:
http://www.openafs.org/dl/openafs/1.4.10/solaris-10/sun4x_510.tar.gz
was built with:

./configure --enable-transarc-paths \
            --with-krb5=yes \
            --enable-namei-fileserver \
            --enable-largefile-fileserver \
            --host=sparc-sun-solaris2.10
