There was a fix added for 1.4.11 that makes us call the filesystem's setattr operation if it is defined. For some other filesystems (ex: btrfs) this would cause truncate to not work at all, and I think Derrick was hoping that this may also have been the cause of the issues with ext3. So it may be that it is fixed - not sure if we have further evidence either way.
