Lately we have seen the same problem a few times.
After fiddling a bit it turns out that passwords with a length of 8
characters will fail, but longer passwords work fine.
The tests were made using klog against a kaserver.
There is a bug in older version of the OS X kerberos library. It
does not do the AFS string to key fu correctly. I filed a bug
with Apple a very long time ago ( 3-4 years?)
But the bug had exactly those symptoms.
