Quoting Jaap Winius <[email protected]>:

It feels like I'm missing something basic here.

And I was. The problem was dash -- the new default system shell for squeeze.

  ~# dpkg-reconfigure dash

Use dash as the default system shell (/bin/sh)? _No_
  ~# _

Problem solved. Strange that dash doesn't get in the way if I log in using a UNIX account, but it does when I use one with Kerberos/LDAP/AFS.

Now for that home directory problem...

Cheers,

Jaap
