I think the issue was that during system "updates" we switched over to SLC
from SL (since the system is at CERN), not customizing to prevent switching
to the CERN OpenAFS RPMS when we did that.  The OS has been upgraded a few
times while we just keep the /vicepb partition and I believe the original
AFS was the SL based one. 

After getting a few emails offline I realized that this might be similar to
an issue we had in the past mixing SL and SLC OpenAFS server software (as
you note the CERN server has customizations for CERN use).   

I reverted the OpenAFS to the SL versions on atums2 and things seem to be OK
again:

That's a bad idea, we've used the volume "magic" for staging purposes in the
past!

Don't mix, and certainly don't switch with existing data.
