Thanks Rainer, I think the issue was that during system "updates" we switched over to SLC from SL (since the system is at CERN), not customizing to prevent switching to the CERN OpenAFS RPMS when we did that. The OS has been upgraded a few times while we just keep the /vicepb partition and I believe the original AFS was the SL based one.
After getting a few emails offline I realized that this might be similar to an issue we had in the past mixing SL and SLC OpenAFS server software (as you note the CERN server has customizations for CERN use). I reverted the OpenAFS to the SL versions on atums2 and things seem to be OK again: [atums2:~]# vos listvol atums2 Total number of volumes on server atums2 partition /vicepb: 931 chamber.OLD_eml4a07 536872814 RW 8634169 K On-line chamber.OLD_eml4a07.readonly 536872815 RO 8634169 K On-line chamber.OLD_eml4a09 536872817 RW 702642 K On-line chamber.OLD_eml4a09.readonly 536872818 RO 702642 K On-line ... chdata.thr.readonly 536871666 RO 15373 K On-line chdata.traveler 536871668 RW 416 K On-line chdata.traveler.readonly 536871669 RO 416 K On-line chdata.tsensor 536871671 RW 381 K On-line chdata.tsensor.readonly 536871672 RO 381 K On-line chdata.verticalizer 536871674 RW 140882 K On-line chdata.verticalizer.readonly 536871675 RO 140882 K On-line eduard_disk2 536874843 RW 9518 K On-line Total volumes onLine 931 ; Total volumes offLine 0 ; Total busy 0 Using: [atums2:~]# rpm -qa | grep openafs kernel-module-openafs-2.6.18-194.el5-1.4.12-79.sl5 kernel-module-openafs-2.6.18-194.32.1.el5-1.4.12-79.sl5 openafs-client-1.4.12-79.sl5 openafs-1.4.12-79.sl5 kernel-module-openafs-2.6.18-194.8.1.el5-1.4.12-79.sl5 openafs-kpasswd-1.4.12-79.sl5 kernel-module-openafs-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5-1.4.12-79.sl5 openafs-krb5-1.4.12-79.sl5 openafs-server-1.4.12-79.sl5 Sorry for the noise on the list and thanks to everyone for their quick and helpful replies! Don't mix, and certainly don't switch with existing data. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rainer Toebbicke European Laboratory for Particle Physics(CERN) - Geneva, Switzerland Phone: +41 22 767 8985 Fax: +41 22 767 7155
