While this is true, this is not the problem that is preventing Office applications from opening in-use files in read-only mode. The problem is that a shared lock for a particular byte-range cannot be obtained in AFS due to the fact that the file servers do not yet support byte range lock allocations. We are all looking forward to the day that the byte-range lock implementation you have been working on can be merged into the tree. Jeffrey Altman
