I did use nscd for a while. I regularly sign in and out of a VPN on this computer, and nscd was caching the negative responses for internal-only hostnames when I dropped out of the VPN. When I would re-enter, I couldn't connect to my internal servers (by hostname :) and after a while DNS caching was more trouble than it was worth.
