It may help to give a better example. I work at a university, and each of the students in our college (a sub-unit of the university) has a home directory in AFS. All user files are stored there, and we do not sync. All backups are handled using the AFS backup software, to back up to tape. Most files are stored in the home directly and are accessed directly out of AFS.The AFS cache makes accessing the files very quick.

Our users access their files from Windows and Linux using native OpenAFS clients. This allows our users to sit down at any of our 1000+ workstations and access their files.

AFS is not a copy/sync technology. It is a location-independent
distributed file system. The home directory if stored in AFS can be
accessed from multiple devices simultaneously. Those devices can be big
servers, client desktops, or even mobile devices. Your File System
will begin offering iOS and Android clients in the not to distant future.

Definitely not a requirement. Basically, the objective is to use AFS
as an automatic backup of the users home directory.

Hi All,

Is there any chance that someone could post a step-by-step guide on
something like Howtoforge.com?

I'm really intrigued by AFS and would like to use it, but it seems like it
might be a lot of work to get going and in the end AFS might not be the
right tool for the job.

Basically, I would love to implement something similar to Dropbox but would
sync a user's entire home directory. We're mostly a Mac environment but
Apple's own Portable Home Directory solution is kind of lousy.

Sincerely,

Ryan

Is a web interface a must-have requirement?

I suggest just having home directories in AFS and avoid syncing. Is that
acceptable?
