Just to clarify a bit, 1.6.6pre1 is needed to support a kernel that has user namespaces enabled, which is true for debian's (and ubuntu's?) recent 3.6.12 kernels but not necessarily for kernels in other distributions. For instance you don't need the user namespace support if you are running a fedora 19 system with a 3.12 kernel.
