Oops, dumb mistake:

   cmake -DCJAMES_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/cjames/openbabel-2-3-beta/build ../

In other words, I was installing it on top of itself rather than in the 
"install" directory.  That's gotta be a recipe for trouble!  It probably 
removed libopenbabel.so.4.0.0 in preparation for installing it.
