Actually it's worse than that merely confirming the list e-mail. Spammers send spam with a fake return address, the target they want to spam. By replying, the list is essentially forwarding their spam. Even if you strip all of their message, they'll still do it because it's done by robots that don't check whether the trick is actually working.
