It's now working.  The openbabel install from synaptic does not include the 
setup.py script but the bindings are available separately from the package 
manager.  It is called python-openbabel.  There is another package called 
python-babel which is for something completely different (and which stopped me 
looking further when I found it)

You should either install it all via synaptic, or you should install
it all from the source code. Does Ubuntu 8.04 provide the python
